Artist Statement Examples for Painters

This example is for a painter working with abstraction. Around 200 words, first person:

I begin each painting with a single material decision — a ground colour, a gesture, a resist. What follows is a process of accumulation and erasure that I do not fully control. The surface becomes a record of time spent, rather than an image arrived at.

I am drawn to paint as a medium because of its resistance. It does not behave consistently. Two marks made with the same hand and the same brush produce different results depending on the humidity of the room, the dryness of the previous layer, the angle of approach. I am interested in working with this instability rather than against it.

The paintings in this series were made over eighteen months in a studio in the outskirts of Lyon. They are large-format works on paper, ranging from one to three metres, using oil stick and oil pastel applied without brushes. The physical relationship between body, material and support is central to how the work is made and how I understand what it means.

What works here: opens with a concrete action, not a general claim. The process is described specifically. The final paragraph anchors the practice in material and physical reality.

This example is for a figurative painter. Around 180 words:

I paint the people I know. Not portraits in any commemorative sense, but images of proximity — the back of a head in a kitchen, a hand resting on a table, a figure half-out of a frame. My interest is in the ordinary moments that accumulate into a life rather than the ones that mark its turning points.

The paintings are based on photographs I take myself, but the photographs are not the subject — they are starting points. In moving from photograph to painting, I am looking for what changes: what the hand notices that the camera does not, what gets lost in translation, what has to be invented to make the image cohere.

I work in oil on canvas, usually small to medium scale, and I return to the same paintings many times over months or years. A painting is finished when I stop being able to see it clearly.

What works here: the opening sentence is specific and unusual enough to make you want to read on. The practice is described through a genuine problem the artist is working through, not a summary of themes.

The most common problem in painter statements is description substituting for thinking. Describing what your paintings look like — the colours, the scale, the subject matter — is not a statement. Curators can see your paintings.

A strong statement answers different questions: Why this medium? Why these images or decisions? What are you working toward or working through? What changes when you make a painting rather than something else?

The difference between a statement that reads as generic and one that reads as specific is almost always a concrete detail: a specific material, a specific question, a specific period of making. These details cannot be faked, and curators recognise their absence immediately.
