Standard section order for a visual artist CV

The order below is what most galleries and institutions expect. Solo exhibitions first, education last — the opposite of an academic résumé:

  1. Name and contact — full name, city, email, website
  2. Solo exhibitions — reverse chronological
  3. Group exhibitions — reverse chronological, selective after 15–20 entries
  4. Residencies
  5. Education
  6. Awards and grants
  7. Collections — public and institutional only
  8. Press and publications

Each exhibition entry uses the same format: Year — Title (italicised), Venue, City, Country. Consistency across every entry is more important than any individual formatting choice. If you want the template first, use the artist CV template or the free Artist CV Generator.

Early-career visual artist CV example

If you are early in your career, your CV should be short — not padded. A short, honest CV with real entries always reads better than a long one with inflated or vague listings.

This CV is short. That is correct — fabricating exhibitions or using vague entries to fill space is immediately detectable by curators who work in the same circuits.
